On this day 28 years ago, the first ever theatrical Pokémon film debuted in Japanese cinemas, and would later take the world by storm and become one of the most iconic anime films ever made. For the first time ever, we are happy to offer you a complete Domesday capture of the original LaserDisc of the first Pokémon theatrical film, presented in the highest quality possible for the format, fully subtitled. Why LD? Wasn't this movie remastered on Blu-ray? Well, yes, but there's a catch. Originally released on VHS and LaserDisc only, this version of the film is unique and differs from later releases. Commonly referred to as the "international version" or "Kanzenban/Complete Version" of the film, later re-releases and any foreign dubbed version contained further edits and especially the inclusion of more CG animation than was in the original; thus, this original cut was only ever released on VHS and LD, and should be preserved in its own right. The original release of the film, especially on LD, is exceedingly rare and goes for insane amounts of money online, so not many have had the opportunity to capture it at all, let alone in the quality it deserves. Using the Domesday Duplicator, we have been able to preserve the original cut of the film in better quality than what was previously available, and possibly the best it'll ever look. Unfortunately, it will likely always remain stuck in SD in an official capacity due to the international version becoming the de facto final cut of the movie, but we believe the original should be preserved as well, and a good amount of people even prefer this original version over what came later. The LaserDisc was acquired by and captured by Tanks in its original standard definition resolution using the Domesday Duplicator. Then the disc was sent to zerocool for audio capture. The film is presented with its original theatrical 5.1 surround mix, preserved in a FLAC format after separating the single audio file to fit the two sides of the disc and syncing to the final, conformed video. This is notable since from what we know, prior releases of the film only included the Dolby Stereo track (which is just a downmix of the 5.1, anyway), making this the first release that retains the discrete Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. In addition to this, we've also taken the liberty of including the English dub of the film, also 5.1 surround, taken from the Australian Blu-ray and edited down as best as possible to sync to the film's original cut. Full English subtitles were sourced from SOSSubs, which were then modified with some revisions & improvements courtesy of imatu—a QC'er from LonelyChaser Fansubs with whom we frequently collaborate. MartyMcflies has also done us the major favor of scanning the LaserDisc jacket & booklet in high quality, and passing the scans to Kaleia78 for further digital touch-ups. These scans are also included as bonuses in this release. Speaking of bonuses, this release also includes the Pikachu Summer Vacation special, which was also included on the LD, albeit a proper, far superior HD remaster from the original film exists for that. We hope you enjoy this very special celebration of a film near and dear to many fans' hearts in a whole new way.
