Orphan presents a new version of Toei's second feature-length (and first wide-screen) color cartoon, 1959's *Shounen Sarutobi Sasuke* (*Young Sarutobi Sasuke*). Sarutobi Sasuke is a legendary folk-hero, a ninja who served the Sengoku-era warlord Sanada Yukimura in the latter's ultimately futile resistance to the rise of Tokugawa Ieyasu. In the movie, Sasuke is a boy living in a forest with his sister, Oyuu, and the usual collection (for Toei) of animal sidekicks - a monkey (Jiro), a sun bear (Kolo), a female deer, her fawn (Eri), and others. Unable to defeat the witch Yasha-hime when she attacks his animal friends, he decides to leave home and learn ninjutsu. He is taken in by a hermit, Tozawa Hakuunsai, and rigorously trained. He returns to confront Yasha-hime and her allies, vicious bandits led by Gonkuro, and save his sister from the witch's vengeance.
